The hidden dangers for diesel drivers

Do you drive a diesel car doing low mileage mainly around town ?

You may or may not be aware of the horror story about clogging and failing DPF's (Diesel Particulate Filters) causing vehicles to suddenly go into limp home mode with a warning light displaying on the dashboard, as highlighted on Watchdog last year.

Many dealerships would advise that a new DPF needs to be fitted at frightening costs ranging anywhere from £750 to £2000 depending on make and model

An additional problem is also now surfacing. Modern diesels, especially those with turbos, also suffer from EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve) clogging to suddenly go into limp home mode. This can also be a costly repair.

turbos also have a specific problem that their Variable Vanes become coated with carbon causing erratic running.

A further problem for all diesels is carbon deposits accumulation in the inlet manifold which again causes running problems. 

The final common problem is clogging of the injectors which can cause the engine to smoke out of the exhaust, high emissions and noticeable loss of fuel economy
